Elegance. It’s a word that we often strive to attain when describing our households. But what is elegance and how is it achieved? Elegance is the characteristic of being “graceful or stylish in appearance or manner”. It creates a lasting impression, is sophisticated, but most importantly, it’s still approachable. Elegance is not a term that’s limited to one type of style. Any style can be elegant. But knowing the definition of elegance only gets you so far. What does it truly mean to add elements of elegance to your home?
One of the core aspects of elegance is cleanliness. A space must by physically clean to exude any level of elegance. This means a space must be vacuumed, clear of any marks, have crisp fabrics and upholstery, and be scrubbed to a shine. The icing on the cake is to introduce a nice smell to the space, too. A room that both looks and smells clean will have a powerful effect on those who enter it. A feeling of cleanliness is also about the tidiness and organization of a room. Too many items or items that are out of place will instantly detract from a room’s elegance. Try to utilize sharp, clear lines in the design to emphasize the cleanliness.
Focusing on the quality of your decor will also improve a home’s elegance. Furnishings that are durable and stand the test of time are far more elegant than pieces of furniture that need to constantly be replaced or seem cheap to the eye. A good term to think about when planning for elegance is “sleek”. Spaces with technological additions and accessories will seem far more elegant than spaces that do not embrace modern features. Updated light fixtures, USB power outlets, and smart home thermostats are all examples of modern day elegant features. These elements on their own are showy, so try to keep them subtle to maximize their impact. The more they blend in the more elegant they’ll become!
Elegance is an excellent goal for your home. Think about all of these elements and ideas when increasing the elegance in your home!
