Organize Your Closet Like A Pro!

Admit it, your closet is probably a mess. Clothes are scattered about, drawers won’t close, and you ran out of hangars three shopping trips ago. You’ve gotten used to the chaos, but it’s amazing how much time you’re wasting by having to sift through it all to find the good stuff. If this sounds familiar, then it’s time you took some advice from the pros and learned how to organize and clean out your closet. You’ll be amazed at the difference a clean closet makes in your life!

The first step is to get a good overview of your wardrobe. Ginny Snook Scott, a professional organizer, recommends making four piles of your clothing: the “now pile” for clothes you actually wear, the “someday pile” for clothing that is worn occasionally, the “seasonal pile” for weather-specific clothes, and the “never pile” for clothing that you wear so infrequently that you might not even recognize it anymore. If your “never pile” looks massive don’t be alarmed! On average, 40% of a person’s wardrobe is never worn. This is the perfect time to bite the bullet and get rid of those clothes that are just sitting and taking up space.

Now that you’ve separated out all of your clothes and donated the pieces you never wear, it’s time to deal with the “seasonal pile”. The answer? Put it in storage. No, don’t put them in a storage unit, but pack them away somewhere close by and easily accessible. Give them a good cleaning, make sure they’re dry, and then store them in cloth bags.

The final step is to thoroughly clean and dust the surfaces in your closet. Chances are quite a bit of dirt and dust have accumulated in those out-of-sight places in your closet. Take care of it now while it’s empty! By the time you’ve finished putting all of your clothes back into your closet it will be shocking to see how clean and tidy it is!
